For this DIY, I took the photo of Martin Luther King Jr. and altered it to reflect Trump’s America. I first superimposed Trump’s face onto MLK’s, blended it, and lightened his hands. Then, I added a variety of elements that are associated with Trump supporters into the crowd, including KKK members, Nazi flags, and confederate flags. To tie it back to the original MLK photo, I included a small banner plane broadcasting the message “DREAM TO MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN” as a twisted way to call back to MLK’s I Have a Dream Speech.

The purpose of this photoshop was to show that although we have gone forward in time, we have not gone further, if not backward, in social progress. In today’s political climate, it has become acceptable to be a Trump supporter, a person who is a supporter of racism and bigotry. It became known during the 2016 election cycle that he was embracing the support of David Duke (a KKK Grand Wizard), his policy was and still is compared to that of Hitler’s, and his supporters have been open about their white supremacist beliefs. In the 60s, however, Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech signified a moment in history where people were standing up for equality and against the injustice that plagued the United States. By giving this iconic photo a modern spin, I am trying to reflect on what has become of America — we have literally elected a person who represents the exact opposite of what MLK stood for to the highest office of the United States of America.
